You must try the Diner's Classic English Breakfast.
Hands down the best English Breakfast I have ever tried, loaded with BOTH bacon and sausage, served with hash browns, grilled tomatoes, beans, deep fried bread (delicious if you try a little bit with your eggs, beans, and sausage), and two eggs, all for some $12. Oh and they also throw in 4 slices of complimentary toast served with peanut butter, jam, and marmalade which goes extremely well with the bottomless coffee.
For about $15+tip you can leave this place feeling full enough that you wouldn't have to eat for another whole week. The ambience is amazing as well with London and British royalty themed decor. A must try if you're ever visiting the UBC/Point Grey area.
A 10/10 in my books.
Stella has charm and biting wit. No time for the stodgy, the stuck up and the witless.
Beware all ye' who enter here! Be prepared for LUV. As in: Can I get you something else luv? How was your breakfast luv? Ah' right luv? More coffee luv?
Guess what? I LUV being here.
The food is hearty, thick, meaty. It is like eating in someone's home kitchen. Like eating at my grandparents house when I was a kid. White toast. Eggs over easy. Sausage. Done and done!
If you are looking to eat low-cal healthy and expect kale with your meal, don't come here.
A special place with its a character all its own. I will come back here.
I have grown up in England for almost 9 years and I have missed having English Breakfast in the morning. My old coworker recommended me to go to this restaurant called "The Diner" by West 10th Avenue.
This is already my third time coming here in the past year and I must say their English Breakfast is amazing. Stella is the amazing lady who runs the place and she always makes British Jokes. Don't take anything too personal as her humour is dry and subtle.
Definitely have a wonderful time taking pictures of the Underground underneath your cutlery and the many other ornaments around the restaurant. The first time I came here I was taken aback at how much "British" stuff this place has.
One thing to point out though, the table is sometimes dirty so you can kindly ask Stella to clean it for you before you sit down.
This is a simple, homey shop located near Kits, just a short distance away from UBC. They have a fairly large menu consisting of British comfort food. I had their One-Piece Fish & Chips (with Haddock) and Traditional British Breakfast. The food was very tasty and the prices were more than reasonable. The service was also quite friendly. This is definitely a place worth checking out.
One-Piece Fish & Chips, Haddock ($12.80):
The fish was fairly generous in size and was coated in a wonderful layer of crispy batter. I haven't had haddock many times before; the meat I guess was kind of like cod and was quite tender and juicy. I don't think the quality of the fish was as good as a place like Fish Counter, but it was still good and not fishy. I absolutely loved the fries, which were also very crispy on the outside, while being tender and starchy on the interior.
Traditional British Breakfast ($9.95):
This came with bacon, eggs, sausage, baked beans, fried tomatoes, hashbrowns, fried bread, and toast. This was the first time that I've ever had fried bread and I have to say, I've been missing out. The bread was wonderfully crispy and absolutely soaked in oil/grease in the most wonderful, delicious way. It's certainly not going to be for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. The bacon was tasty and the sausages were juicy with a nice bit of spice. I also enjoyed the beans, which were tender and had a nice bit of sweetness. I did find the eggs to be underseasoned and also a bit undercooked (which was my fault for not specifying how I wanted my eggs to be - I actually like my eggs overmedium/overhard). The hashbrowns were pretty disappointing for me; they were mushy and not crispy, and also quite underseasoned/bland.
Recommendations: Fish & Chips, Fry Bread
We came here one evening and I had a hankering for breakfast, which they did serve regardless of time. Nothing like having some good old English cooking to bring back memories of childhood food.
Now, at the time we came, a weeknight and near closing time. It wasn't busy.
We ordered a Shephard's pie and Bangers n Mash and a side of mushy peas.
OMG I loved their mushy peas!
Bangers n Mash was spot on with the lovely well flavoured and rich gravy. I shoulda ordered some eggs for it too.
Shepard's pie was lovely. I was able to get a few bites for tasting.
Gotta come back for the rib eye dinner with Yorkshire pudding. "you can't have your meat unless you have your pudding. You can't have your pudding unless you have your meat!"
So yeah, we're gonna come back as long as they'll have us.
